Atar is a cross-border Sudanese journalism network of independent journalists producing stories from the heart of daily life in Sudan; in-depth investigations, data-driven reporting, and documentation of what the war has done and continues to do to Sudan: its people, its society, its economy, its culture, and its politics. We also tell the stories of how people on the ground are finding ways to endure and resist.

We see Atar Network’s journalism as a source on Sudan unlike anything else available. We believe that journalism is not built on speed alone, but on research, investigation, and continuous verification. That is why we seek to establish a grounded journalistic practice; one that starts from an understanding of the complexities of society, and approaches people and their daily concerns without simplification, propaganda, or polarisation.

This mission aligns with journalism’s core responsibilities, and the need for it has only grown since the outbreak of the war and the local and regional propaganda that has flooded the public sphere with misinformation and lies; deepening the conflict both on the ground and in the information space.
